UW Theme Classic updated to v1.41.0

On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, UW Theme Classic was updated to version 1.41.0 in the WiscWeb service. A full list of changes in this version of the UW Theme can be reviewed in the changelog.

This release includes a noteworthy update for Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Pro as well as some stylistic changes to align this theme more closely with the campus brand. Users will notice changes to the editing view, as well as subtle changes to styles for things like theme typography and colors.

Note: You may need to perform a hard refresh on your editing environment in order to see these changes fully.

ACF Pro updates bring changes to content layout settings

This update will bring changes to the editing experience for content layouts:

Settings moved to the left

For those who like to edit things like headlines, row ID, content width, padding, etc, there are some changes that will impact how you navigate to this content. Specifically, the gear icon for content layout settings has moved from the upper right corner to the upper left corner:

Minus icon became a trash icon

If you are looking to remove a content layout or page element from your page, you’ll need to use the trash icon now.

Additional ACF changes to be aware of

The following changes may impact the look/design of content in the editing view:

  • Colors for things like content layouts and page elements
  • There are now expand all/collapse all options throughout the page builder
  • You can rename a content layout or page element for the page you’re on
  • The “Disable” option doesn’t do anything is not recommended. If you need to hide a row, please continue using the Hide a Row feature

Stylistic changes

UW Theme Classic was also updated so that styles more closely match what is in UW Theme 2.0. Please remember to visit brand.wisc.edu for the latest brand-related style guidance.

This update included changes to:

  • Colors
    • Link blue: #0479A8 → #036796
    • Body text: #33333 → #121212
    • Light gray: #F7F7F7 → #F3F3F3
    • Blue gray: #DADFE1 → #E1E5E7
    • Dark gray: #33333 → #282728
  • Typography
    • Font weights have changed to use their named/100 values
    • Link underline values changed for headings and body text
    • Font smoothing was applied theme-wide
    • Body text line height was changed from 1.5 to 1.6
  • Buttons
    • Font is set to 17px
  • Arrow symbols
    • Caret icon (looks like two “greater than” symbols) has been updated to a single blue arrow
      • Appears most commonly in “More” links below Today.wisc.edu events, post lists, and Group of Links
  • Search input in header area
    • Border radius updated to 0.5rem
  • Header and footer
    • Red rule above the footer has been removed
    • All CAPS headers in footer have been changed
    • Font weight and sizes were adjusted to align with UW Theme 2.0 styles

Updated theme link in the footer

We’ve updated the UW Theme link in the footer of all UW Theme sites so that users can easily differentiate between UW Theme Classic and UW Theme 2.0. If you have a UW Theme Classic site, you should see “UW Theme Classic” listed in the bottom of the footer, along with a link to the UW Theme Classic informational site.

Patch added on 11/5/25 to upgrade to 1.41.1

On Wednesday, November 5, the team patched 1.4.0 to 1.41.1. This patch included a minor update to ACF, a fix for the gear icon invisibility issue for content layouts, and a small change to the styles for blockquotes within Text Blocks.
