Reminder: Embed Code Change Goes into Effect on January 12, 2023

Over the past 6 months, our team has been communicating an upcoming change related to embed code. This change is going into place on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

On that date, embed code like iframes, script, and style tags will not work within WiscWeb sites.

Who is affected?

We have about 800+ sites that currently have this ability. The complete list of affected domains is listed in the KnowledgeBase. Most of these groups will not be affected as they were not using embed code on their sites, or were only using approved embed options.

If your site is not in this list, you’re already complying and will not experience any change. Also, non-WiscWeb UW Theme users will not be affected.

What is happening?

On January  12, 2023, we will be removing the option to use embed code from tools that are not on our approved list. This includes, but is not limited to, the following HTML tags:

  • <iframe>
  • <embed>
  • <span> (<span> tags with the ‘style’ attribute will still work)
  • <input>
  • <script> (The tag will get removed. You may sometimes see random code on the page upon publish)
  • <form>
  • <style> (Style attributes will still work – like with the <span> tag, but <style> tags will not work on their own. The tag will be removed, leaving behind random code)

After this change takes effect, any embed options built with these tags that are not otherwise accommodated as part of the service offering will break.

Here’s some examples of new behavior you can expect after this change takes effect:

  • When adding new embed tags to a text block, the content will disappear upon publish
  • Existing embed tags will disappear the next time you update the page/post
  • When adding certain HTML code like <script> tags, some content may disappear upon publish. Alternatively, some may be left behind and will render as random code on the published page/post. We recommend removing this code entirely so as not to confuse your users
  • Existing code like <script> tags may be partially removed upon publish for existing pages/posts
