Important Gutenberg theme rollout information for WiscWeb users

The WiscWeb and Office of Strategic Communication teams are busy planning out the launch of the new Gutenberg theme. Here’s some relevant updates related to this rollout:

Theme name

The new Gutenberg theme name will be “UW Theme 2.0.” The existing theme will be referred to as “UW Theme Classic” to help differentiate between the two.

Theme websites

The existing UW Theme informational site has been republished to uwthemeclassic.brand.wisc.edu. We’ll eventually be publishing a separate website for information specific to the Gutenberg theme.

Theme rollout

We are still planning to launch the theme sometime in fall 2025. Information about the release will be shared via this email list, as well as various other outlets. The initial release is targeted for WiscWeb users, specifically.

The first few weeks after the release will be dedicated to those who wish to build their Gutenberg sites from scratch. This allows us to stress test new WiscWeb infrastructure. After a few weeks, we’ll be opening things up to groups who wish to utilize a migration tool to import content from an existing WiscWeb site.

We will require that primary contacts request the new Gutenberg websites, once that option is available. Please assign a primary contact to all sites that you manage in preparation for this change.

Theme documentation, support, and training

We have been building out documentation and training materials for users and hope to share more information on this soon. Generally, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

  • UW Theme 2.0 documentation – UW Theme 2.0 documentation will reside on the related informational website in the future.
  • UW Theme Classic documentation – The current plan is to move instructional content related to the existing UW Theme to its own space in the KnowledgeBase. This content will be retired when all WiscWeb sites are moved to Gutenberg.
  • WiscWeb service documentation – Anything related to service policies or processes will remain in the WiscWeb KnowledgeBase space.
  • UW Theme 2.0 training – We anticipate providing two major training avenues: one for learning how to use the new theme in Gutenberg and another for how to migrate your website. We’ll be advertising these options as soon as we have them available. The training will require sign-up and will be offered virtually. All sessions will be recorded.
