On Tuesday, Dec. 12, WiscWeb sites were upgraded to WordPress Core v6.4.
This release included two maintenance updates and a security update, fully bumping us up to v6.4.2.
There are two noteworthy updates included in this release:
Media attachment pages
There will no longer be an attachment page created for media on new sites (old sites will still see this option).
Preview option for pages
Previewing pages will have a different experience for new pages (existing pages will not change). If you try previewing without publishing, you may not see the content.
Due to this change, we recommend always saving or publishing before attempting to preview content.
The video below attempts to show the before/after views for previewing on a new page:
In the Before View page (before the WordPress v6.4 release), we make an edit to a page and click Preview. The edits show up right away in the preview.
In the After View of the page (after the WordPress v6.4 release), we make an edit to the page and click Preview. The edits do not show up.
For those interested in learning more about this change, we offer the following notes:
- WordPress made a change in version 6.4 that changed the way that revisions are set (related WordPress article).
- Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) is packaged into the UW Theme. This technology powers the page builder functionality.
- ACF does not do auto-saves in WordPress. This is something that has been requested as a feature with the vendor but has not yet been added.
- This behavior is a mix of both the change to WordPress and the fact that ACF does not autosave.
Note: In our email to users on 12/11/23, we mistakenly noted that this change would impact Posts. It should not impact Posts in WiscWeb as they do not use ACF.
