Update regarding use of Twitter Embeds in WiscWeb

A few of you have reached out to let us know that your Twitter embeds are no longer working on your WiscWeb websites. We wanted to follow up to fill you in on what we know.

If you are not using Twitter embeds on your site, you can safely ignore this message.

Summary

Embedded Twitter feeds stopped working on Monday, July 3rd. This is likely related to Twitter’s new requirement that users must log in to view tweets. Single embedded tweets appear to still work at this time.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

There does not appear to be a fix for this. This was a decision made by Twitter and we (WiscWeb) are unable to impact the results. We recommend you remove your Twitter feed for now. This can help limit confusion for your users.

Is this just a WiscWeb issue?

No. We have confirmed that the issue exists outside of wisc.edu (see example at the bottom of Jetpack’s help documentation for their Twitter block).

Is this just temporary?

We have no information or insight into how long this could last. The error message displayed on embedded feeds does not seem to be intentional or intuitive, which makes this look like it could be a temporary mistake. However, there is no indication from Twitter that embedded feeds will be fixed in the future.

How can I stay updated with new info?

We will email updates as we learn more. We will also share info via email, at our Lunch and Learn sessions, and in posts on our website.
