On Thursday, April 6, 2023, the WordPress UW Theme was updated to version 1.23.0 in the WiscWeb service. A full list of changes in this version of the UW Theme can be reviewed in the changelog.
Here are a couple of items of note:
Pronouns for Fac/Staff member pages
Faculty/Staff member pages have been updated to allow for a new field called Pronouns:
A user may choose to display pronouns in the faculty/staff page listing, as well:

Custom button for image carousel
Previously, the image carousel feature had a standard “Learn More” button option.
We’ve updated this so that users can customize the button text.
The text will default to “Learn More” but that can now be modified as needed:
Thanks to all who requested and upvoted feature #11 in our Feature Request Board! This is not only a fun, new feature but it is also an accessibility improvement.
Reminder: WiscWeb prioritizes feature requests that help improve accessibility.
Jump/anchor links for Group of Links display
Users now have the option to set jump/anchor links for Group of Links menus!
This will work for both regular hyperlink items and button links.
Simply choose the “In Page Link” option from the “Kind of Link” dropdown. Then, enter a hashtag (#) and the jump link ID into the “Link Location” field:

Updates to ordered and unordered list styles
With this release, we have modified how ordered and unordered (numbered and bulleted) lists display in the UW Theme.
An overview of the changes:
-
- Indented bulleted and ordered lists within desktop and 1- or 2-column displays
- Updated CSS so that ordered lists no longer have zeros with slashes
- Reduced spacing around list items including nested lists
“Before” view shows on the left and “after” view shows on the right:
This update also fixes feature #53 in our Feature Request Board!
Fix for inconsistent hyperlink display
Users noted a few inconsistencies with how hyperlinks are styled within the UW Theme. This update fixes known bugs.
More information about the current hyperlink styles are located in the KnowledgeBase.
Updated Google Analytics code to set the cookie domain to “none”
We have seen an increase in users who are unable to reach WiscWeb and other campus web services.
Tools like Google Analytics and Hotjar use browser cookies to track users. Many tools like this set their cookie on the highest level domain possible (usually wisc.edu). Because of this, cookies can accumulate in the users’ browser. If too many accumulate, it can make web requests too large for servers to process.
To help with this, we have updated our Google Analytics code within the theme to set the cookie domain to “none.” This limits the cookie to the domain of the site setting the cookie and reduces how many cookies are carried from website to website.
Note: We are unable to influence Hotjar cookies within the theme.
Known issues
Hyperlink styles
We have learned that the updates to hyperlink styles has impacted the display of Events Calendar links. Events list hyperlinks are now appearing as black instead of blue when displayed in white or light gray backgrounds.
Since the service will be navigating away from Events Calendar in the very near future, we have decided not to allocate energy into a fix for this. Events Calendar styles are notoriously challenging to augment, which is one of the many reasons we are abandoning the plugin.
Workaround: If this issue is particularly concerning for you/your team, please consider switching the background color for your content layout to blue-gray. This will allow the links to display in blue, as expected.
If you notice any breaking issues on your site after this update, please submit a request via our Customer Support Form (Note: please choose the “Emergency Issue” option when submitting). Please provide as much detail as possible when documenting the issue you are experiencing.
