Migrate your existing WiscWeb site to UW Theme 2.0

What does it mean to migrate your existing WiscWeb site into UW Theme 2.0? It means you’re ready to get started on transitioning your content over to the new theme and have time scheduled for cleaning up the content in the new location.

Here’s a few use cases for migrating:

  • You have limited time/resources for building from scratch.
  • You don’t want to rebuild your content manually.
  • You have a large site and don’t wish to lose old posts/pages.

Migration considerations

  • Your site can only be migrated once. Therefore, you should only request a migration when you are fully ready to get started. You will not be able to request a re-sync of the data once you have started the process.
  • Please stagger your migration requests. Work on one site at a time rather than requesting all sites at once.
  • Once we migrate your site, you will need to keep your existing site and that new project site in sync. Any edits to your existing site will need to be manually added to the new UW Theme 2.0 project site.
  • If you are just looking to play around with the theme but are not ready to actually transition your pages, please consider the WP Playground instead.
  • Some features that WiscWeb offers have not been rebuilt for UW Theme 2.0 yet.
  • All sites will need to “re-launch” in UW Theme 2.0. You’ll need to schedule a new launch request after you’re done building. You may keep the same wisc.edu domain.

Your website journey

If you are interested in migrating your WiscWeb site to UW Theme 2.0, here are the recommended steps you should take:

  1. Review training materials for UW Theme 2.0
  2. Review the UW Theme 2.0 informational website (this is where all theme documentation exists now)
  3. Review the Migration documentation in the KnowledgeBase
  4. Request your new site
  5. Go into each page of your site and ensure content has been migrated correctly. For anything that didn’t migrate as expected, rebuild or tweak as needed
  6. Request a site launch, when your content is ready to be live
