UW Theme 2.0 Element Conversion

The following UW Theme 2.0 Element Conversion table depicts the completion status of certain website features, as well as migration notes for those that are migrating from UW Theme Classic to UW Theme 2.0.

If there is an existing UW Theme feature you do not see listed below and would like to understand the status or migration path, please reach out via the WiscWeb Support Request Form and we will add it to the list.

Status definitions

This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.

Available in 2.0 for migration

The feature has been reviewed and a replacement has been identified within the block editor and/or the Gutenberg theme.

A migration path exists for the feature.

Not available for migration

These features are still under consideration and development has not been completed.

These features do not have a migration path.

Won’t be supported in 2.0

The team has decided not to pursue this feature in the future Gutenberg theme.

These features typically won’t have any migration path set and will need to be manually recreated, if needed.

Accordion Available in 2.0 for migration UW Accordion block Content will migrate over into the UW Accordion block but each accordion panel will contain Classic blocks that will need to be converted. Click through each accordion panel to ensure content is converted correctly.
Alternating Content Boxes Available in 2.0 for migration Media and Text block patterns Indented sub-links will not work for predefined menus. Also, predefined menu links will come over as static content.

Buttons Available in 2.0 for migration Buttons block Buttons on red, dark red, or dark gray backgrounds will automatically turn white. For other backgrounds, including photos, manual adjustment may be needed if visibility is poor.
Column layouts Available in 2.0 for migration Column block One column layouts are migrated to a Columns block even though these aren't in Columns. This was a decision made to simplify how this content was migrated.
Customizer Settings Available in 2.0 for migration UW Theme Settings The Settings UI pulls the old Customizer data from the database, if it exists. Users will need to flip through every tab in the Settings UI to confirm everything came over correctly.
Embed Content Available in 2.0 for migration WP Core Embed block and variations for services like YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify. Custom embed block variation for campus-supported services such as Kaltura These should auto-migrate as Embed blocks. Note that Airtable has been removed as an embed option due to accessibility barriers.

Fac/Staff Listing Available in 2.0 for migration UW People plugin and People Listing block All images will map to the 400px square option, by default. There is no "custom" image size in UW Theme 2.0. When importing, users will need to go into each person's post type page and confirm content is migrated correctly. If an image is smaller than 400x400px, it will not migrate over and will need to be manually replaced in the person's bio page. The image should be in the Media Library for easy selection, but we encourage use of a larger image for better quality results.
Featured Content Block Available in 2.0 for migration Featured Content Cards patterns Featured posts populated by post or page content will come over as static content. Also, users will need to manually update the content to honor equal heights.
Gravity Forms plugin Available in 2.0 for migration Shortcode block Users must “Convert to blocks”. Forms that have the “legacy markup” toggle enabled in the form settings will not inherit the theme styling. Manually update the setting after migration to turn off legacy markup.
Group of Links Available in 2.0 for migration UW Group of Links block; UW Links block Group of Links that are populated via a WordPress menu will migrate in as static links. The option to use a menu in Group of Links is not currently available. Equal heights for Group of Links will not be honored in the migration. To achieve this look, users will need to add the “Text-only cards with group of links” pattern and manually add their links back. Link lists that use at least one in-page link will use the blue arrow style. Reversed buttons on dark backgrounds will appear as outlined in UW Theme 2.0, unlike UW Theme Classic (which had no custom style).
Hero Banner (image carousel) Available in 2.0 for migration UW Hero Carousel block Hiding a hero banner image is not yet available.
Hero Banner (static image) Available in 2.0 for migration Cover block Users will have the option to choose from a number of predefined patterns for hero/banner styles. Static hero images will get migrated to a Cover block with a Paragraph block within it. If your image isn't displaying at the quality you expect, please re-add the image to the block from the Media Library. Wordpress may have chosen a small fallback image size and that can result in lower quality results.
Hero Carousel: Randomize slide order Available in 2.0 for migration Users will need to manually reset this option after migration
Hero with featured content inset or headline Available in 2.0 for migration Various banner patterns Any hero images that use these stylistic options will not auto-migrate. Users will have the option to choose from several banner patterns when rebuilding this content.
Hide a Row Available in 2.0 for migration Hide a group Users will need to wrap the content in a Group block and then they will have the option to hide the entire grouping.
Image Available in 2.0 for migration Image block These will migrate to an image block. Images in Text Blocks will need to be converted from Classic blocks. If your image is not aligned as expected, select the overarching Stack or Group block and adjust the alignment there. Migrated images won't have a 'Resolution' drop down but new images you add to a page do. If you wish to change the resolution of an image, you'll need to re-upload or reselect from media
Image and Content Carousel Available in 2.0 for migration UW Story Slider block If you have any images that are in portrait orientation, this will not display well in the UW Story Slider block. We suggest cropping these to be portrait orientation and re-uploading the image.
Image Gallery Available in 2.0 for migration Gallery patterns The UW Theme 2.0 block does not accommodate a "Title" like the UW Theme Classic did. Instead, the caption overlays the image in the main view and then disappears when the image is selected.
Page Level Meta Tags Available in 2.0 for migration
Post Listing Available in 2.0 for migration Posts migrate in as Classic blocks that show content as expected on the front end. Users can utilize a Post Listing pattern for display of a post list, which draws upon the Query block. If there is no featured image present on a post, there will be white space to the left of the title in the post listing view. This cannot be removed.
Posts Available in 2.0 for migration Posts (Classic blocks wrapped in a Group block) Posts migrate in as Classic blocks that show content as expected on the front end. Post content will be wrapped in a Group block. If users need to edit a previous post, they will have to click "Convert to blocks" on the Classic blocks. Posts that utilize the native WordPress gallery in UW Theme Classic will migrate to a standard Image Gallery block in UW Theme 2.0 after converting to blocks. Migrated posts will not honor image alignment. If you wish to re-align an image, you'll need to "Convert to blocks" for the post and then manually change the alignment. Migration Station will appear in Posts in case users wish to restore the original post after making edits.
Related Posts Available in 2.0 for migration UW Featured Post Will not auto-migrate. Users will be required to rebuild related posts on older posts if they wish for them to show up.
RSS Feeds Available in 2.0 for migration RSS block
Search Box Shortcode Available in 2.0 for migration Search Block
Stylized Quote Available in 2.0 for migration UW Quote block This option will accommodate both pull quotes and block quotes.
Tabbed Content Available in 2.0 for migration UW Tabs block Content will migrate over into the UW Tabs block but each tab will contain Classic blocks that will need to be converted. Click through each tab to ensure content is converted correctly.
Text Block Available in 2.0 for migration Paragraph block, Heading block, List block, etc. The Text Block allowed for a number of actions that will be split amongst several blocks in the future. Features like UW Card Style will be incorporated into patterns for ease of application. Block quotes within Text blocks will not transition automatically and will need to be rebuilt as Quote blocks.
Today.wisc.edu List Available in 2.0 for migration Today.wisc.edu block Today URLs will need to be updated to use ‘https’ instead of ‘http.’ If using http, the content will not migrate.
Widgets Available in 2.0 for migration Corresponding widget blocks Widgets won't appear automatically in your post design. If users wish to display these, they can manually add the widget blocks to their primary news page or create a synced pattern for replicating on individual posts.
wpDataTables plugin Available in 2.0 for migration Shortcode block Users must “Convert to blocks” Users will need to select the Group block and manually set the Content Width to make it wider if the table requires it.
UW Language Fonts plugin Available in 2.0 for migration UW Lanaguge Fonts plugin
UW Submit to Third Party plugin Available in 2.0 for migration This plugin allows for integration between Gravity Forms and Eloqua or Salesforce. This should just migrate over content exactly as it was in UW Theme Classic.

Reusable Content plugin Won’t be supported in 2.0 Synced patterns The Reusable Content plugin will not be accommodated in UW Theme 2.0 or WiscWeb in the future. This content will migrate in as a shortcode on the page and you will need to manually update it. Synced patterns in the block editor can be used as an alternative approach for pulling the content into multiple places. However, you'll have to manually rebuild the content as a synced pattern.
Full page light gray background option from Customizer Won’t be supported in 2.0 The theme will not include the Customizer setting to change all pages to a light gray background by default.
Custom CSS option in Customizer Won’t be supported in 2.0 The site-wide Theme Settings will not include a Custom CSS option
Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Won’t be supported in 2.0 The Gutenberg theme will not be utilizing ACF and it will not be packaged in.
