UW Theme or WiscWeb Feature | Gutenberg Status | Corresponding Gutenberg Feature (if applicable) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Accordion | Completed | UW Accordion block | Unordered (bulleted) or ordered (numbered) lists within accordions will migrate as tightly spaced lists. Content will migrate over into the UW Accordion block but each accordion panel will contain Classic blocks that will need to be converted. Click through each accordion panel to ensure content is converted correctly. |
Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) | Deprecated | The Gutenberg theme will not be utilizing ACF and it will not be packaged in. | |
Alternating Content Boxes | Completed | Media and Text block patterns | Indented sub-links will not work for predefined menus. Also, predefined menu links will come over as static content. |
Back to Top Shortcode | Completed | UW Back to Top block | No migration path exists for this yet. |
Buttons | Completed | Buttons block | Buttons on red, dark red, and dark gray backgrounds will automatically transition to white. If any other backgrounds are chosen and the display is not ideal, you will have to manually change them (e.g., if using a photo as a background). |
Column layouts | Completed | Column block | One column layouts are migrated to a Columns block even though these aren't in Columns. This was a decision made to simplify how this content was migrated. |
Custom CSS option in Customizer | Deprecated | The site-wide Theme Settings will not include a Custom CSS option | |
Customizer Settings | Completed | UW Theme Settings | The Settings UI pulls the old Customizer data from the database, if it exists. Users will need to flip through every tab in the Settings UI and click “Save” in order for the content to save correctly in the new location. |
Document Listing | Post-launch | ||
Embed Content | Completed | WP Core Embed block and variations for services like YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify. Custom embed block variation for campus-supported services such as Kaltura | These should auto-migrate as Embed blocks. Note that Airtable has been removed as an embed option due to accessibility barriers. |
External Posts | Completed | External link field in right sidebar | |
Fac/Staff Listing | Completed | UW People plugin and People Listing block | All images will map to the 400px square option, by default. There is no "custom" image size in UW Theme 2.0. When importing, users will need to go into each person's post type page and click Save. This is required in order to bring in the image size data. If that doesn't happen, the images will look like they are there but the image size meta won't actually be in place. |
Featured Content Block | Completed | Featured Content Cards patterns | Featured posts populated by post or page content will come over as static content. Also, users will need to manually update the content to honor equal heights. |
Full page light gray background option from Customizer | Deprecated | The theme will not include the Customizer setting to change all pages to a light gray background by default. | |
Gravity Forms plugin | Completed | Shortcode block | Migrates in as a Classic block. Requires the user to click the "Convert to blocks" option in the editor to switch it to the Shortcode block. |
Group of Links | Completed | UW Group of Links block; UW Links block | Group of Links that are populated via a WordPress menu will migrate in as static links. The option to use a menu in Group of Links is not something that will be accommodated at launch. Equal heights for Group of Links will not be honored in the migration. To achieve this look, users will need to add the “Text-only cards with group of links” pattern and manually add their links back. Also, Group of Links that use at least one in-page link will use the blue arrow style. |
Hero Banner (image carousel) | Completed | UW Hero Carousel block | Randomized slide order and hiding a hero banner image will not be available for launch. |
Hero Banner (static image) | Completed | Cover block | Users will have the option to choose from a number of predefined patterns for hero/banner styles. Static hero images will get migrated to a Cover block with a Paragraph block within it. |
Hero Carousel: Hide a hero banner | Post-launch | This feature will not be available for launch. An alternative option would be to build a pattern that includes all of your possible hero carousel slides and you can place that on the page when you wish to swap out content. | |
Hero Carousel: Randomize slide order | Post-launch | ||
Hero with featured content inset or headline | Completed | Various banner patterns | Any hero images that use these stylistic options will not auto-migrate. Users will have the option to choose from several banner patterns when rebuilding this content. |

Image Only Carousel | Post-launch | ||
Page Level Meta Tags | Completed | ||
Post Listing | Completed | Posts migrate in as Classic blocks that show content as expected on the front end. If users need to edit a previous post, they will have to click "Convert to blocks" on the Classic blocks. Posts that utilize the native WordPress gallery in UW Theme Classic will migrate to a standard Image Gallery block in UW Theme 2.0 after converting to blocks. Migration Station will appear in Posts in case users wish to restore the original post after making edits. No need to click Migrate unless you restored the post. |
Related Posts | Completed | UW Featured Post | Will not auto-migrate. Users will be required to rebuild related posts on older posts if they wish for them to show up. |
Reusable Content plugin | Deprecated | Synced patterns | The Reusable Content plugin will not be accommodated in UW Theme 2.0 or WiscWeb in the future. This content will migrate in as a shortcode on the page and you will need to manually update it. Synced patterns in the block editor can be used as an alternative approach for pulling the content into multiple places. However, you'll have to manually rebuild the content as a synced pattern. |

Text Block | Completed | Paragraph block, Heading block, List block, etc. | The Text Block allowed for a number of actions that will be split amongst several blocks in the future. Features like UW Card Style will be incorporated into patterns for ease of application. Block quotes within Text blocks will not transition automatically and will need to be rebuilt as Quote blocks. |
Today.wisc.edu List | Completed | Today.wisc.edu block | Today URLs will need to be updated to use ‘https’ instead of ‘http.’ If using http, the content will not migrate. |

UW Publications | Post-launch | This is a WiscWeb plugin that will not be ready for theme launch. | |
Widgets | Corresponding widget blocks | Widgets won't appear automatically in your post design. If users wish to display these, they can manually add the widget blocks to their primary news page or create a synced pattern for replicating on individual posts. | |
wpDataTables plugin | Completed | Shortcode block | Migrates in as a Classic block. Requires the user to click the "Convert to blocks" option in the editor to switch it to the Shortcode block. Users will need to select the Group block and manually set the Content Width to make it wider if the table requires it. |
--- | Post-launch | Icon block | We are exploring the possibility of adding the Icon block to UW Theme 2.0. There is not a related UW Theme Classic feature for this. |
